Abstract

Many researchers claim that the use of the outdoor playground is reduced in modern childhood.
Children have less contact with nature than before and are spending less time outside in the surroundings of their home. The aim of this study was to study the interest of children in outdoor activities. Ca.
100 children were followed for 7 years, and 47 children in another 3 years. The children are asked the
same questions in 6 different waves of the study. What did they want to do outdoors? The study indicates
that the interests of the children change with increasing age and that the gender differences were significant for many activities. While interest in traditional outdoor activities is reduced with growing age,
there is greater interest in more vacation-like activities on the one hand, and more sports-like activities
on the other. Interest in nature and outdoor activities are to some extent linked to parental age and level
of education and also to the family’s vacation habits.
