Abstract

This article is based on interviews with 15 adults recalling episodes from their childhood and from episodes connected to being parents. I work within a hermeneutic phenomenological tradition and make use of the methodology developed by van Manen (1997). Both phenomenological and pedagogical practices are oriented towards concrete episodes and phenomena in ordinary everyday life (Sævi 2007, van Manen 1991/1993, Nohl 1970, Bollnow 1968/1989, Mollenhauer 1983/1996). The understanding of what a pedagogical relation is, is based on work by Tone Sævi (2005, 2007). The discussion of aspects that may contribute to very large changes – turning points – in the relation between adults and children, is here seen in connection with thoughts from the Danish philosopher K. E. Løgstrup and with Otto Friedrich Bollnow’s article about the pedagogical atmosphere. My intention with this article is to discover and discuss pedagogical aspects that can contribute to relations between adults and children being, developing into and remaining good and constructive.
