Abstract

How can we as teachers communicate and teach the topics of history and tradition for children in the day care centers? I started out reflecting upon this issue based on a genuine interest in an area that has been given relatively little attention within teacher training programs at the university/college level. To teach history and traditions using the physical surroundings, with a rich variety to touch and feel, is a challenge of great importance when working with small children. The text refers to sources within the subjects of education, social sciences, history and cultural history. My personal experience from working in day care centers and teacher training education will also play a role. As emphasized in the basic of the Norwegian Framework plan for day care centers, our responsibility to care for both nature and culture has to be taken into account in this concern. In general this article is based on a Norwegian context.
