English abstract
This paper explores the distinction between adults and children in an attempt to shed light on the foundation and range of children’s participation in decision making on issues concerning themselves. The questions why and how we should distinguish between adults and children are explored with reference to Immanuel Kant’s thoughts on the status of children within the wider context of his practical philosophy. A strategy of self-effacing paternalism is recommended, in which paternalism and empowerment is seen as complementary principles.
